The Flanders Hotel
The Flanders is the last of Ocean City's grand oceanfront hotels still standing, and the only one you can actually buy into.
It went up in the early 1920s as the town's showpiece hotel, designed by local architect Vivian B. Smith, the same man behind Ocean City's City Hall and Music Pier. Built of steel, concrete, and tile and marketed as fireproof, it was the only boardwalk building left standing after the fire that leveled the block in 1927. Over the decades its guest register ran from Grace Kelly to Jimmy Stewart. In the mid-1990s the old hotel rooms were rebuilt into individually owned condominiums, and in 2009 the building earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places. It runs today as a true full-service condotel: you own your suite, and the front desk, housekeeping, and rental team keep the building humming around you.
